Ph.D. MIT 1978 (Management and Higher Education): How do academic programs in research-oriented universities change over a period of decades, and why? This study of a civil engineering program (from the late 1940s to the mid 1970s) suggests the need for program to adapt to a changing environment in order to be competitive for grants, students, and ideas. This process of adaptation tends to go through several stages (recognition, experimentation, etc.), each marked by error ("groping").
